Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in San Marcos public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Cancellation of the San Marcos Holiday Parade
Mission Hills High band students and parents pleaded with the council to help save the holiday parade, which faces cancellation now that Kiwanis has stepped down as sponsor. They asked the city to lead fundraising and planning so the community tradition survives.
Community Foundation grants to local nonprofits
The San Marcos Community Foundation distributed about $70,000 last year to youth programs, schools, food banks, and health organizations, and is recruiting advisory board members.
Bradley Park Sports Field Lighting Replacement
New sports field lights are one step closer at Bradley Park — the council approved the construction plans and let staff start taking bids.
Future of the San Marcos Holiday Parade
The Kiwanis Club, which has run the 28-year-old Holiday Parade, is bowing out, and residents — especially Mission Hills High band students and families — are urging the city to help save it. Council members stressed the parade belongs to Kiwanis, not the city, and agreed to keep conversations going, with the topic headed to council goal setting next year.
Future of the Holiday Parade
Kiwanis is stepping down as the Holiday Parade's organizer, and the city would need $50-70K and heavy staff time to run it this December. Rather than cut into public safety or road budgets, the council punted the question to a goal-setting meeting, likely February.
Park Improvements Funding (CIP #PK013)
The city will update its playground condition assessment and replace playgrounds at at least two parks, plus better coordinate Sheriff outreach, code enforcement, parking, and animal control.
Corky Smith Gym HVAC Upgrades
A nearly $1.3 million Trane contract will replace aging HVAC serving the shared Corky Smith Gym and Boys & Girls Club, funded partly by a $275,000 transfer from the city's infrastructure fund.
Board and commission appointments
Mayor Jones and other council members pressed applicants — especially alternates — on briefing attendance, warning that unprepared alternates can't step in to vote when regulars are absent.
Sports field renovation services contract
The city locked in a contractor for up to $500,000 of as-needed sports field renovations over five years.
Gary and Mary West PACE senior care facility
Councilmembers toured the PACE facility serving 470+ seniors with medical and social care, letting them stay in their homes. They have room for more participants and need volunteer barbers and hairdressers.
Blue Zones community well-being study
San Marcos is launching a roughly six-month Blue Zones study aimed at improving health, longevity and community connection, followed by an implementation phase with healthcare partners.
